Appreciative Inquiry Consulting: A Positive Approach to Change

WHAT IS IT?

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a powerful new vehicle for energizing positive change in an organization's human, ecological and economic functioning. Its aim is to discover, expand, and sustain an organization's root causes of success. AI is particularly useful in turbulent environments and has been used very successfully with complex changes like transformation, restructuring, mergers, acquisitions, and for relational processes such as union/management relationship, teambuilding, capacity building and diversity.

Appreciative Inquiry is the study and exploration of what gives life to human systems when they function at their best. This approach to organizational change is based on the assumption that questions and dialogue about strengths, successes, values, hopes and dreams are themselves transformational.

HOW?

Our approach is to partner with our client group and co-create the path forward. View the 5-D Cycle. Typically, we work with a core team and train them in the AI approach and methodology. This core team works with the consultants to establish the change process and develop the interview guides, which will be used within the organization. Several approaches could be employed including an AI Summit or smaller focus groups.

Some change agendas where Appreciative Inquiry has proven quite successful include:

  • Strategic Planning
  • Cultural Transformation
  • Team building
  • Morale and Retention
  • Organization Design
  • Quality Improvement
  • Mergers
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Diversity
